Intolerance Jogya

In a strongly worded statement,  the Semarang Catholic archdiocese has claimed that the incident was a violation against the state ideology of Pancasila and the 1945 constitution.

In which ..

Local residents cut the top off a cross-shaped headstone on a Catholic’s grave.

Local residents prevented his family from holding prayers.

The church reached the conclusion following the investigation.

The investigation conducted by its commission on peace and justice in Yogyakarta.

The duty of the security apparatus and the government is to protect the human rights and basic rights of citizens.

The commission claims to have found indication that …

The family of the deceased Catholic has suffered from acts of intolerance before despite his efforts to live harmoniously with his neighbors.

They were even once physically threatened.

Some newcomers with the backing of outsiders have physically and psychologically pressured the family, directly or indirectly, through some community members.

The team which was sent out by the commission also found that ..

The written statement showing that his wife would not make an issue of the incident,

the written statement was drafted and sent to her by 7 people representing village officials, the police, and local military command.

She was told to sign the statement to shut down the outrage on social media over the incident.

The duty of the state apparatus is to protect the little ones and the weak,

Not to pressure the little ones so they budge to create pseudo harmony.

There was a serious threat against pluralism in Yogya

The church will monitor the investigation into the case.

She called on the government to do more to fight the rise of intolerance.

The rise has started to influence the grass roots.

The government is turning a blind eye to the fact that many acts of intolerance are happening.

The incident was the result of a society that had become increasingly intolerant.

It is not enough for the community to recognize a religion.

It is also required to respect the rituals and traditions of the said religion.

The cross is a religious symbol that should be respected.

The administration would thoroughly investigate the incident.

The administration would assured the public that

it was committed to upholding the rights of its citizens, particularly in practicing their beliefs.

Desecrating the cross was an act of intolerance.

The cross is the symbol of Catholicism, …
When it gets cut off then the sense of identity of the related person is disturbed too.

The local government would be an impartial party that could ,,

The local government could create a forum where all related parties could sit together.

The sit together to get to the root of the problem to prevent it from spiraling into a big problem
.
If there is indeed a scenario where this has been planned..

Then this is a sign that intolerance has become a serious problem.

As jog is a city of students, culture, and tolerance,

So the citizens should be progressive in thinking cultured, and used their rationality clearly.

Ministry was looking into the incident.

It called on the local administration to immediate address the problem
If there was evidence that there was a violation against freedom of religion there.

-- former news:

Villagers of P have cut off the cross on a Christian’s grave,…

saying the religious symbol was not welcome in the village.

This is community consensus.

He could be buried here, but there should be no Christian symbol.

He is a local figure.

The deceased Christian, identified as A, was a resident of P.

He worked as a driver for the red cross until he died of a heart attack

He died at the age of 63.

He was buried at the public cemetery.

The majority of P residents were Muslims,
Those buried at the local cemetery were muslims.

He was allowed to be buried at the cemetery because of an emergency,

But the cross on his grave has to be cut down.

He also could only be buried in the periphery of the cemetery.

In the future, this will be a muslim-only cemetery.

He declared.

The residents also did not allow his mourning relatives and friends to hold prayers at the deceased’s house,

It forced them to hold it at the nearby church.

“Our village is tolerant, except for religious rituals,” Bejo said.

He argued that ...

Non-muslim were prohibited from holding prayers to avoid conflicts with residents

Residents who objected to such religious activities.

He claimed that his family had accepted the rule.

While showing what he says was a statement from his wife that ..

She accepted the rules and would not make an issue of the matter.

He is the local church officials.

The mass has been held at the church.

She decline to comment on the incident.

I am still sad.

Jogja interfaith brotherhood forum deplored the incident ..
Saying religious pluralism was only recognized formally but not substantially embraced by society.

We will hold a meeting with the P community.

Police were investigating the incident.
